How I Lost 35 Pounds (aka Two Briskets) and Kept It Off With Macros

When I first set out to lose weight, I didn’t fully grasp how much 35 pounds actually was until I had picked up two briskets to smoke for the company BBQ. They weighted 35lbs, the equivalent to what I had lost with my Macro journey. My mind was blown, two whole, heavy briskets, gone. Now, years later, I’ve not only shed that weight but kept it off, all thanks to macro tracking. Here’s my story.
The Turning Point
Like many, I’d tried diets before. They either left me hungry, overwhelmed, or feeling like I was “failing” whenever I enjoyed a meal out with friends. I wasn’t looking for a quick fix anymore; I wanted something sustainable that didn’t involve cutting out all the foods I loved.
That’s when I stumbled across macros. The idea of tracking macronutrients—protein, carbs, and fats—clicked for me. Instead of labeling foods as “good” or “bad,” macros allowed me to see food for what it is: fuel, enjoyment, and something to balance.
What I Did Differently
1. Setting a Plan
At first, learning to track my macros felt like learning a new language. But once I understood my personal targets, it became second nature. My goal wasn’t just weight loss—it was eating enough to fuel my body and maintain energy for my day-to-day life.
2. Prioritizing Protein
Protein became my secret weapon. It kept me full, helped me maintain muscle, and made my meals satisfying. My staples? Greek yogurt, beef jerky, and lean proteins, from chicken breast to pork tenderloins—all foods that fit into my life seamlessly.
3. Finding Balance
With macros, no food was off-limits. Taco night? It fit. A slice of pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving? Enjoyed guilt-free. By planning ahead and understanding portion sizes, I could have my favorite treats while staying on track. I didn’t need to be perfect—I just needed to be consistent.
Keeping It Off
The true victory wasn’t just losing 35 pounds; it was keeping it off. Here’s what helped:
A Mindset Shift: I no longer viewed my journey as “dieting.” Instead, I saw it as living in alignment with my goals.
Flexibility: Life happens. I’ve had vacations, holidays, and celebrations. Macros gave me the freedom to adapt without derailing my progress.
Community: Surrounding myself with people who understood and supported my journey—whether through friends, family, or clients—kept me motivated.
Why I Love Macros
Losing two briskets' worth of weight taught me that food isn’t the enemy—it’s a tool. Macros gave me control, confidence, and the ability to create meals I actually enjoy. And now, as a nutrition coach, I get to share that knowledge with others.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or unsure where to start, know that it’s possible to achieve your goals without giving up the foods you love. Trust the process, lean into consistency, and remember: this is about building a lifestyle that works for you.
